Abstract
The paper brings together the key areas of nutrition affecting the health of infants and toddlers at the time of publication. It has provided the background material for the development of the health education booklet Healthy Eating for Babies and Toddlers from Birth to 2 Years Old. These guidelines are an important strategy within the National Plan of Action for Nutrition. It is envisaged that this background document will provide health professionals and educators with technical information relating to food for infants and toddlers. Topics include breastfeeding, formula feeding, solid foods (including cultural foods), milk, other fluids, adverse reactions to foods, energy, fat, iron, calcium and other minerals, fibre, nutritional supplements, some common concerns, physical activity and food safety issues.
