Creating a Better Future focuses on the prevention and improved management of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and many cancers. The Strategy got underway on July 1, 2010 and has a long-term vision of 20 to 50 years.
Creating a Better Future builds on the Let’s Beat Diabetes programme to facilitate a more co-ordinated, strategic and effective approach to the development and implementation of strategies and interventions to reduce the burden of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and many cancers within Counties Manukau.
The plan provides:
-Linkages with existing national and regional plans related to the prevention and management of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and many cancers
-Priority areas for funding prevention and treatment services within the region
-A clear aim, goals, principles and strategic objectives for those engaged in achieving a reduced burden of disease.

What Worked Well
-A high level of support from the CMDHB Board and community partner organisations.
-Significant involvement of all partners, including primary care, in the development of this umbrella strategy.
-Creating a Better Future has been developed based on the learnings from five years of experience of Let’s Beat Diabetes.
What Didn't Work Well
Learnings from Creating a Better Future are ongoing and will progress as the strategy evolves.
