HEHA Ki-o-Rahi event – Huge Success

The 2011 HEHA Yr 5-8 Ki-o-Rahi event was held recently on Friday 25 February 2011 in Waitangi that saw 17 teams participate.

Committed whanau and energetic tamariki from as Far North as Taipa Area School through to Tauraroa Area School from Whangarei turned up to tautoko the day and take their mark in the popular game.

Sport Northland’s Kaiwhakahaere and event organiser Leela Hauraki says “it was tumeke (awesome) to see tamariki from different rohe (areas), different schools come together, learn together and most of all play together”.

Some schools had never really played ki-o-rahi before the event and improved markedly as the day progressed.  The essence and wairua of the day remained the same, in and around participation, fun and whanau.

Taipa Area School took home the taonga this year and finished things off beautifully with the Ngapuhi Haka, “Ara Ngapuhi”.  They were the overall winners with 2 of their teams (Taipa 1 and Taipa 2) winning all of their games in their respective pools.

Hauraki concludes that “this event was the result of collective input and local support from Northland District Health Board, organisations, schools, whanau, kaumaatua and kaimahi of whom all deserve credible recognition – nga mihi ki a koutou”.
