WHAT IS FANAU?
Fanau is a family-focused programme which is trying to find out the best way to help Pacific children and their families with healthy eating and exercise. It is for children who are 6 – 12 years old and their parents/primary caregivers who live in or close to either Mangere or Otara in South Auckland.
The Fanau team is made up of researchers and community health workers. They are from the University of Auckland. It is their job to find out how we can be healthier with exercise and healthy eating.
The purpose of this research project is to provide Pacific families an opportunity to be part of a weight management programme developed for their children. This study will test whether the programme was successful in managing the weight of Pacific children and compare it with another existing weight management programme i.e., Kids In Action. The results of the study will be useful in the development of a weight management programme for Pacific children and their families.
