Description
WHAT IS FANAU?
Fanau is a family-focused programme which is trying to find out the best way to help Pacific children and their families with healthy eating and exercise.
It is for children who are 6 – 12 years old and their parents/primary caregivers who live in or close to either Mangere or Otara in South Auckland.
WHO IS THE FANAU TEAM?
The Fanau team is made up of researchers and community health workers. They are from the University of Auckland. It is their job to find out how we can be healthier with exercise and healthy eating.
WHAT HAPPENS AT FANAU?
Fanau will have lots of fun exercise and information on healthy foods and eating. You will get to play sports and activity games with other children.
Your parents/primary caregivers will also be part of Fanau and will learn about exercise and healthy eating too. Some activities will be held in a hall, and some will be at your house.
Fanau will run for 10 weeks. Then you and your parents/primary caregivers will graduate to healthy eating and exercise by yourselves for the next 52 weeks (12 months). However, the Fanau team will still be in touch with you to check on progress until you have completed the programme.
The Fanau team will check your weight and height at the start of the programme, and then every week or so. This is so they can tell how well the programme is going. They will also ask you what you think about the programme. When they ask these questions, the Fanau team will use a tape recorder to record your answers BUT if you don’t want them to use the tape recorder at any time, you can ask them to switch it off.
IS THE INFORMATION ABOUT ME KEPT PRIVATE?
You and your parents/primary caregivers will be able to see your weight every week, if you want. Otherwise, everything else is kept private. It will be kept at the University for a long time. Only the Fanau researchers will see it. They will use it BUT without your name on it, to help find the best way to help all children and parents/primary caregivers.
HOW CAN I JOIN THE FANAU PROGRAMME?
You can join Fanau if you and your parents/primary caregivers want to. Someone like your school nurse can ask the Fanau team to contact your parents/primary caregivers and you.
DO I HAVE TO KEEP GOING TO FANAU?
No. You can change your mind and stop going if you want to.
WHO CAN I TALK WITH IF I HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
You can talk with your parents/primary caregivers and the Fanau team. Here are their names. You may speak with them at the programme or your parents may contact them on the phone:
