Ko ngā kai ō te wao, te ngākina, te waitai, te wai Māori, na Io, na Tane, na Tangaroa, na Maru – Tihei Mauri Ora. Food and physical activity were central themes of traditional Maori society. They are no less important today. Physical activity for Maori is not only important for health but is also a part of the transmission of culture through activities such as kapa haka and waka ama. Maori youth are amongst the most active people in New Zealand, with high representation in competitive sports. Maori communities are making significant changes to eat healthier food. Many marae promote healthy food and Maori health providers work with communities to improve nutrition knowledge. Iwi are taking an increasing role in influencing healthy environments.
