Study: Green leafy veges can cut diabetes risk

Source: Reuters/TVNZ

According to scientists, eating more green leafy vegetables can significantly cut the risk of developing diabetes.

British researchers reviewed six earlier studies on links between diabetes and the consumption of fruits and vegetables and found eating an extra serving a day of vegetables like spinach, cabbage, and broccoli reduced adults' risk of getting type two diabetes by 14%.

The findings do not prove that the veggies themselves prevent type two diabetes which is often linked to poor diet and lack of exercise and is reaching epidemic levels as obesity rates rise.

People who eat more green leafy vegetables may also have a healthier diet overall, exercise more, or may be better off financially and any of those factors could affect how likely they are to get diabetes.

Bollyworx in Mt Roskill kicks off to a dazzling start

Mt Roskill BollyworX kicked off with a big bang. It was a ‘superhit’ with a fully packed Mt.Roskill War Memorial Hall in May road on Wednesday 28th July. This was proven by the awesome turnout of participants from all walks of life –families, toddlers, elders, males, females of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels. However this was not limited to just to the Indian community. The event also attracted Asians, Kiwis and locals. The group of over 100 participants committed themselves to this exciting musical initiative to an hour of solid BollyworX.

BollyworX is SPROUT’s physical activity programme and is a classic representation of the Indian flavours it brings into the community - right from choreography to song selection from the latest Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu Indian films. BollyworX is not a dance but just 'plain fun body movements' with Bollywood music which is exceptionally easy and fun, suitable for all age groups and all fitness levels BollyworX is fun for everyone and can be done without feeling self-conscious. There are no 'jhatka- matka' or obscene Bollywood moves that will embarrass anybody. Its culturally appropriate as well.

Typically in BollyworX, participants do ‘huff-and-puff’ exercises as instructed by BollyworX instructors who are trained ‘Community Coaches’. To become BollyworX instructors, one undergoes the ‘Community Coach’ training by ‘Netfit’ who are New Zealand's only fitness professionals association. The training is on the basics of the human body, fitness and exercise; safe exercise techniques; how to plan exercises and choreograph them into Bollywood music etc.

The community participation and the volunteering has made BollyworX is a strong community health brand in the South Asian community. Community work is never possible without a committed team.

Among the many complements SPROUT’s BollyworX instructors received on Wednesday, here’s a comment that blew them away -"I have been going to gym for many years, but your workout outclasses them all". One Asian lady who came today told a SPROUT volunteer that she has got requested her boss to have an early lunch break on Saturdays to attend BollyworX in New Lynn as she likes it so much. We also had a request to give franchise to do Bollyworx in North Shore. This shows the positive difference on health SPROUT is making in the South Asian community.

SPROUT volunteers and instructors proved this again by being good examples of selfless service and commitment to the cause of lowering health risks affecting the Indian and South Asian community. Like it’s said "Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something."

Twice as many white girls in the US reach puberty aged 7 as a decade ago. No one is sure why this should be the case, but obesity and exposure to chemicals that mimic the female hormone oestrogen are the prime suspects.

The figures come from a study of 1200 girls in three US cities. Of the girls studied, 10.4 per cent of white 7-year-olds had breast development consistent with the onset of puberty, compared to 5 per cent in a 1997 study.

IN A dramatic twist in the tale of the world's obesity epidemic, it appears that childhood obesity levels have stopped rising in many rich nations around the world. Some claim it is proof that healthy-eating campaigns are working, while others are concerned that the data hides discrepancies between rich and poor compatriots.

Together with a research review that shows the stabilisation of childhood obesity rates, or even their decrease, in 15 countries worldwide over the past decade (see map), new data also showing obesity levelling off was presented at the International Congress on Obesity in Stockholm, Sweden, last month.

By Maggie Fox

WASHINGTON (Reuters) Aug 03 - More than 72 million U.S. adults, or 26.7%, are obese, up 1 percentage point in two years, the U.S. government reported on Tuesday.

Obesity has become "a major public health threat" and is steadily worsening, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

"We need intensive, comprehensive and ongoing efforts to address obesity," CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden said in a statement.

"If we don't more people will get sick and die from obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of death."

August 4, 2010 (Orlando, Florida) — A 2-year review of knee and hip replacement surgeries performed by a single surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City found that complication rates in obese patients were low, providing another piece of evidence supporting doing the procedures even in the heaviest patients, an issue that has spawned opinions on both sides of the fence.

But the review did show that hospital stays were longer in those who were obese than in those who were not.

The review, a pilot study presented at the National Medical Association 2010 Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly, was an examination of complication rates in people with a body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher who received either hip or knee replacement surgery at HSS between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009.

A low intensity, community based lifestyle programme to prevent weight gain in women with young children: cluster randomised controlled trial

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a community behavioural intervention to prevent weight gain and improve health related behaviours in women with young children. DESIGN: Cluster randomised controlled trial. SETTING: A community setting in urban Australia. PARTICIPANTS: 250 adult women with a mean age of 40.39 years (SD 4.77, range 25-51) and a mean body mass index of 27.82 kg/m(2) (SD 5.42, range 18-47) were recruited as clusters through 12 primary (elementary) schools. INTERVENTION: Schools were randomly assigned to the intervention or the control. Mothers whose schools fell in the intervention group (n=127) attended four interactive group sessions that involved simple health messages, behaviour change strategies, and group discussion, and received monthly support using mobile telephone text messages for 12 months. The control group (n=123) attended one non-interactive information session based on population dietary and physical activity guidelines. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The main outcome measures were weight change and difference in weight change between the intervention group and the control group at 12 months. Secondary outcomes were changes in serum concentrations of fasting lipids and glucose, and changes in dietary behaviours, physical activity, and self management behaviours.
RESULTS: All analyses were adjusted for baseline values and the possible clustering effect. Women in the control group gained weight over the 12 month study period (0.83 kg, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.12 to 1.54), whereas those in the intervention group lost weight (-0.20 kg, -0.90 to 0.49). The difference in weight change between the intervention group and the control group at 12 months was -1.13 kg (-2.03 to -0.24 kg; P<0.05) on the basis of observed values and -1.11 kg (-2.17 to -0.04) after multiple imputation to account for possible bias created by missing values. Secondary analyses after multiple imputation showed a difference in the intervention group compared with the control group for total cholesterol concentration (-0.35 mmol/l, -0.70 to -0.001), self management behaviours (diet score 0.18, 0.13 to 0.33; physical activity score 0.24, 0.05 to 0.43), and confidence to control weight (0.40, 0.11 to 0.69). Regular self weighing was associated with weight loss in the intervention group only (-1.98 kg, -3.75 to -0.23).
CONCLUSIONS: Weight gain in women with young children could be prevented using a low intensity self management intervention delivered in a community setting. Self management of health behaviours improved with the intervention. The response rate of 12%, although comparable with that in other community studies, might limit the ability to generalise to other populations. Trial registration Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry number ACTRN12608000110381.

Nancy J.O. Birkmeyer, PhD, from the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, and colleagues reported the findings in the July 28 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

July 27, 2010 — Once a person loses excess weight, the next great battle is keeping those pounds from coming back a year or 2 later.

Calling a personal coach every month about the latest scale reading or hamburger binge is one solution. Another — one more within reach of the average patient — is consistently logging in to an interactive Internet version of a personal coach, according to a study from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research.

The key word is "consistently." Participants in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health who visited a weight-management Web site almost every month maintained more of their weight loss than patients who checked in sporadically. However, those assigned to a personal coach regained the least amount of weight overall compared with participants who used the Web sites and those whose weight maintenance was self-directed.
