In this study, the authors examined the effects of membership in a fitness program for older adults on social isolation, loneliness, and health. Social isolation can significantly effect health and well-being, and older adults are particularly susceptible to becoming isolated.

The authors found membership in the fitness program increased physical activity and self-rated health, and decreased social isolation and loneliness. They found that the social component of the exercise was important, and that it was not only increased physical activity but also reduced isolation that was linked to health benefits.
