Abstract

In this study, the authors outline quality management processes and appropriate interpretation with respect to HbA1c point-of-care testing in a national diabetes and cardiovascular risk screening programme. Highlights are that point-of-care testing for HbA1c can be convenient for patient and practitioner, as accurate as laboratory testing, and used to screen for ‘pre-diabetes’ and diabetes, and that point-of-care testing must be delivered within a quality assurance programme.
