Healthy eating and maintaining a healthy weight are important parts of managing your diabetes and reducing the risk of developing complications. There is no one "diabetic diet." You do not need to eat special diet foods. Healthy foods for you are the same healthy foods you would want to serve for everyone in your family.

When you have diabetes, a healthy eating style is one that is heart healthy and promotes a healthy weight. This includes eating a wide variety of foods from all food groups and choosing foods low in saturated fat and trans fat. It is also helpful to learn about carbohydrates (natural and added sugars) in food, so you can make choices that help manage your blood sugar levels. In fact, having diabetes does not mean that you cannot eat sweets, but it is important to make healthy overall food choices. There are several meal-planning methods that you can choose from to help you eat a healthy diet.

If you are diabetic and pregnant or at risk for pregnancy, it is especially important to maintain a healthy weight and normal blood sugars. High blood sugars early in pregnancy can cause birth defects. Being overweight or obese increases the risks of pregnancy complications for you and your baby.
