Vegetables NZ, 11 October 2019

Congratulations to the ‘Mod Pods’ team – Chloe Wright, Lorna Breen and Mikaela Vivian – from Carmel College who gained ‘Outstanding’ in the 2019 Crest Challenge.

The team developed pita pockets filled with vegetable hummus and vegetables. These snacks could be thawed and eaten or heated in a frying pan or oven. The team aimed  to create an innovative and convenient vegetable-based product targeted towards teenagers to help increase their daily vegetable intake [3+ per day].

The product had to contain at least three New Zealand grown vegetables, whilst still having a unique selling point and be unlike any other on the New Zealand food market. The team produced  three variants: Mexican – Corn, capsicum, onion and coriander with roasted capsicum hummus; Moroccan – Carrot, cauliflower and onion with a roasted carrot and honey hummus and Indian – Kūmara, peas and onions in roasted kūmara and butternut hummus.

Special thanks to Kylie, Sutherland Produce; Viv, Passion Fresh; Stephen, Fresh Group and Dean, AS Wilcox for hosting the girls on a Forum-on-wheels. The girls’ theme was retro-inspired by Pukekohe’s Café Kaos. The team was sponsored by and Pip Duncan was their mentor.
