Adaptation of the Gut Microbiota to Modern Dietary Sugars and Sweeteners

This article traces the history of sugar and the development of artificial sweeteners, to provide an understanding as to how human gut microbiota has evolved over time to adapt to the consumption of novel sugars. Understanding the consequences of the host–microbe interaction lead the authors to suggest ways to determine the safety of novel sugars and sweeteners.
